Last Day of the Semester

Last day of the semester. The older I get the more it feels like the last day of summer camp in the ’60s.

I was a counselor at Hidden Falls Ranch, and that Friday in early August signaled the final time we staff and campers would see each other for another year, maybe longer.

And so we embraced the moment: engaging once more in our favorite activities, retelling the stories (mostly funny, some painful) of events which had melded us together; making sure we had each others’ contact info; and, most importantly, looking at each familiar face and saying the words—grateful ones for the past, hopeful ones for the future.

All of which happened this week in my Amarillo College classes.

I’ll miss these guys.
