The Tale We’ve Been Landed In

“I wonder what sort of tale we’ve fallen into?” asked Samwise Gangee of his friend Frodo Baggins. The heroes of Tolkein’s Lord of the Rings had been discussing characters who did “brave things in the old tales and songs.”

Sam and Frodo used to think these famous protagonists had chosen their adventures. Now that they were themselves the actors in such a tale, they knew better. “Folks seem to have been just landed in them,” said Sam.

“But, I expect they had lots of chances, like us, of turning back,” continued Sam. “Only they didn’t.”

Hmmm. I wonder if life, especially retirement, is like that.

Maybe we don’t choose what kind of tale we get landed in. Maybe we just choose the courage to move forward.

  1. “Choose the courage to move forward.” This is the way! What is this thing called “retirement”? It’s our opportunity to define life now.

  2. Loved it!! Thoughtful, nostalgic and didactic. ❤ (Didactic is a word. One of my teachers called my writings that once. )
    Keep writing! I loved it!
