Build It and We Will Come

Saw an online link to summer camps for adults, and being an old camp director, I decided to investigate. There are adult camps on the beach, in the mountains, on rivers and by lakes where one can (pick one) surfboard, canoe, practice archery, kayak, fly-fish, zip-line, raft, mountain-bike, rock-climb or ride a horse.

There’s even Space Camp where participants role-play space missions.

Looking at the pics, the only problem is that none of these “adults” seem to be over 40; most appear under 30.

So I googled “summer camps for seniors.” Oh my! The first camp I found for the over-65 crowd featured (get ready to be underwhelmed) Nintendo Wii bowling, crafts, bingo sessions (what is a bingo “session”) and golf cart rides (does this include actually playing golf).

Give me a break. Baby boomers who introduced American culture to jogging and gym memberships are not going to “go gently into that good night.”

My friends ride Harleys and bicycles. They snow ski in the winter and climb mountains in the summer. They play tennis and golf (with or without a cart). Even those with physical limitations do yoga and water aerobics. Hey, I’d go for learning a new language or musical instrument.

Wake up America. This is not your grandfather’s generation. Build a camp with cool activities, and we will come.

P.S. If (or when) you’re over 60, what activities do you want at camp?

  1. Anything that stimulates brain cells. How about Think Tank meetings? Remember when people sat and talked to each other ? Sign me up for that.

  2. I’m with you on this one, Mike! Maybe doing something like what we did at HFR in those early years….I wonder if they have thought about doing a a “seniors” camp…. If they did that, I would come…. 🙂 About the Harley’s and bicycles….can you imagine doing the barrel-race on a Harley?! You, me, Sims, Speckman…..Do that…and I’m in.

  3. Attend the ones you found – the pictures were showing 30+ but I would be willing to bet the 60+ are attending.
