Who’s in Charge?

Did you know Santa Fe was once part of Texas? Well, almost.

In 1836 the new Republic of Texas claimed Santa Fe as part of its western border towns and soon sent a small military party to enforce the claim. This group was easily captured by the Mexican Army, putting an end to all hope of ski resorts in Texas.

We came to Santa Fe for the weekend because we were between hosts in our 2016 Homeless Tour—and because I needed the spiritual lift and perspective I usually find here.

You see, not yet 30 days into retirement, I’ve met an unexpected adversary: uncertainty.

Today, I listed nearly three dozen things I don’t know (things like the projected success of investments, the efficacy of a new budget, future business plans, and scores of last-minute building decisions).

For an avid planner, it’s unfamiliar territory.

The scary thing is I’m thinking it may be good for me. Like those hapless Texicans sitting in the Santa Fe jail, I may need to learn who is ultimately in charge—and it’s obviously not me.
