{"id":1610,"date":"2016-01-31T20:09:17","date_gmt":"2016-02-01T03:09:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mikebellah.com\/wordpress\/?p=1610"},"modified":"2016-02-01T04:55:40","modified_gmt":"2016-02-01T11:55:40","slug":"her-best-friend","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mikebellah.com\/?p=1610","title":{"rendered":"Her Best Friend Fred"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mikebellah.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/mb_color_bestyearsblog-150x15018.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mikebellah.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/mb_color_bestyearsblog-150x15018.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"mb_color_bestyearsblog-150x1501\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1611\" \/><\/a>We were talking about conclusions, and I told them that the last paragraph needs to be the climax of their essay, that it\u2019s a good place for a well chosen quote, or an epiphany, or a surprise (all epiphanies are surprises, but not all surprises are epiphanies).<\/p>\n<p>I said that I\u2019m partial to surprises, and shared a couple of examples (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bestyears.com\/ransom.html\" target=\"blank\">The Toughest Man I Ever Met<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bestyears.com\/halloween.html\" target=\"blank\">A Ghost Story<\/a>). Then, I told them the highlights of Cindy\u2019s narrative about her best friend, Fred.<\/p>\n<p>In her first paragraph, Cindy, an AC student on the Dumas campus, told of an injury she suffered as a senior in high school, one that ended both her season and career as a volleyball player. She couldn\u2019t stand to attend afternoon practices with her teammates\u2014was too painful\u2014so she walked home alone.<\/p>\n<p>That was until her friend Fred noticed and started walking with her. He didn\u2019t give advice, just listened, which was what she needed most.<\/p>\n<p>In the next paragraph, Cindy had moved from her hometown to attend college, and, in the spring semester, she received a Dear Jane letter. Her boyfriend, whom she talked with daily and dated most weekends, had found someone else.<\/p>\n<p>Once again, Fred showed up to comfort her. That\u2019s when she realized that boyfriends can come and go, but a best friend is forever.<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t remember the next two paragraphs, but they were equally convincing. Fred was amazing.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, in her last paragraph, Cindy had finished the essay and decided to try it out on her best friend.
