We\u2019ve traveled by plane, ship and train, but none take the place of a road trip.<\/p>\n<p>Which is what we\u2019re doing for the next couple of weeks. In fact, as you read these words, Charlotte and I are somewhere in the high desert of New Mexico or Arizona on our way to daughter Janet\u2019s place in Truckee, California. That\u2019s our first stop.<\/p>\n<p>The next? Well that\u2019s part of the lure of road trips. There are always surprises.<\/p>\n<p>Which makes me think of a time nearly 40 years ago when I met Northern New Mexico\u2019s Mr. Haney (if you\u2019re unfamiliar with the 60s TV show \u201cGreen Acres,\u201d google it).<\/p>\n<p>Me (from a phone booth by a deserted stretch of highway): &#8220;Yep, I\u2019m about 100 miles north of you; my radiator is gushing antifreeze.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Haney: &#8220;No problem. I\u2019ll tow you. Would you be needing a cab for the passengers?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Me: &#8220;A cab?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Haney: &#8220;Well, the seven of you won\u2019t fit in the truck.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Me: &#8220;Oh, I guess not.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Haney: &#8220;No problem. The wife has a little limo service.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Me: &#8220;Limo?&#8221; Dollar signs flashed through my mind.<\/p>\n<p>Well, the limo turned out to be a \u201963 two-door, Chevy Impala, which, by the way, cost as much as the tow. As it turned out, the radiator needed replaced, but \u201cnot to worry,\u201d said Haney. Seems he owned a \u201clittle garage,\u201d as well as a \u201csmall hotel\u201d when the repairs couldn\u2019t be done that day.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Haney settled for all the cash I had on me, which usually happened with Oliver Douglas (Eddie Albert) and the TV Haney (Pat Buttram). If we had Visa cards back then, I\u2019d still be paying.<\/p>\n<p>Stay tuned.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Just thinking of the term gets my heart racing.
