At least, he told Mom he did.<\/p>\n<p>For the record, I didn\u2019t believe him. I thought he was just currying favor with the chief cook and chauffeur.<\/p>\n<p>Well, it worked. He did seem Mom\u2019s favorite.<\/p>\n<p>And she did burn a lot of toast.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s easy to see why now, scurrying around every morning to get four kids and a husband out the door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDamn it, Ceil. Watch what you\u2019re doing.\u201d My mom knew only one cuss word, and she always whispered it and always directed it at herself not others.<\/p>\n<p>I think about her when I smell burned toast. And about Craig.
