In his essay, \u201cWalking,\u201d Henry David Thoreau recommended walking in the American West. But it wasn\u2019t so much the direction he was recommending but the condition of the region. \u201cThe West of which I speak is but another name for the Wild.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI am leaving the city more and more and withdrawing into the wilderness,\u201d he wrote. \u201cLife consists with wildness. The most alive is the wildest.\u201d<\/p>\n
Arguably the most famous of American naturalists spent a third of his essay on this rant. If you can find it on the Web, it\u2019s worth a full reading. Here\u2019s one of my takeaways:<\/p>\n
\u201cIn short, all good things are wild and free,\u201d wrote Thoreau. \u201cGive me for my friends and neighbors wild men, not tame ones.\u201d<\/p>\n
Wild places and wild walking mates\u2014sounds like a description for disaster (Have you read Lord of the Flies<\/em>?).<\/p>\n On the other hand, it describes some of my best hikes.
