{"id":3498,"date":"2025-03-12T05:35:18","date_gmt":"2025-03-12T12:35:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mikebellah.com\/?p=3498"},"modified":"2025-03-12T05:35:18","modified_gmt":"2025-03-12T12:35:18","slug":"spontaneity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mikebellah.com\/?p=3498","title":{"rendered":"Spontaneity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cLet chance and the town take charge of you,\u201d Graham writes. \u201cFor the world we travel in is more wonderful than human plans or idle hearts desire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Graham is describing a strategy for exploring the streets of New York City, which he calls \u201cthe zigzag walk.\u201d He starts down an avenue, then takes the first left, then the next right, then left and so on, varying the direction from time to time to get to a predetermined location.<\/p>\n<p>He describes the \u201csurprises, delights and curiosities\u201d revealed by the \u201cway of the zigzag,\u201d which he says is \u201cnot the crowds\u2019 way,\u201d but rather \u201cthe diagonal between heart and reason.\u201d He goes on to say he later tried the same method in Paris and again in Cologne. I wondered if he\u2019d be safe doing the same in the 21<sup>st<\/sup> century (remember, he was writing in 1926).<\/p>\n<p>But his method is not lost on me. I am a great planner, which has its rewards. But am I missing something? Planning gives, but does it also take away?
