Artistically Challenged

“A chief source of happiness for retirees,” writes Ernie Zelinski, “is an artistic pursuit.”

So I looked it up. Merriam-Webster defines art as “something that is created with imagination and skill that is beautiful or that expresses important ideas.” For examples, the online dictionary lists paintings, sculptures and drawings.

I’m in big trouble.

My college students snickered when I tried to draw stick figures at the board. And the piano teacher fired me before my second-grade recital (OK, it had to do with behavior as well as aptitude).

You see, I get the imagination part; it’s the skill and beauty that elude me.
