The Retirement Crisis

Google “retirement crisis” and you’ll come up with roughly 2.7 million hits—enough to say, yes, there is a crisis facing the majority of us newly retired types.

I’ve clicked around, and the majority of Google’s links (maybe 99%) take you to articles that talk about money. Seems we haven’t saved nearly enough of it. Duh.

But from the reading I’ve done (over a dozen books now), the crisis seems wider. There’s an identity crisis associated with retirement. Ditto for a self-esteem and confidence crisis, and, most importantly, a crisis of hope.

All of which describe the so-called midlife crisis many of us baby boomers experienced in our 40s. And while I’m a newbie to the retirement variety, I’ve spent much of my adult life writing about the midlife meltdown.

In tomorrow’s blog, I’ll tell you how the two are similar, and how that discovery is giving me hope.
